Lao Ambassador to Thailand Li Bounkham made the remarks as he joined Nan Governor Paisal Wimonrat, local authorities and residents, and around 3,000 Phuan from 23 provinces of Thailand at this year’s 59th rendition.
It took place on February 16 at Ban Lab Muen Phruan School in Chom Chan sub-district of Wiang Sa district.
Phuan communities in Thailand originated from Xieng Khuang province more than 1,100 years ago, and relocated around 400 years ago.
This year’s festival included the offering of clothes and other consumer goods to monks, religious ceremonies, traditional sports, stage shows and a beauty contest.
At the opening ceremony, Li expressed appreciation of the event for the longstanding solidarity, love and unification of the Phuan.
He noted the original customs and culture, which have been conserved, saying it gave him pride to meet the Phuan, who upheld their traditions and respected the land of their ancestors.
Li said past visits by the Phuan in Thailand to their Lao counterparts showed their love for their ancestors’ land and contributed to the good relationship between Laos and Thailand.
The Phuan festival is held in Thailand every year and rotates amongst host provinces with the ethnic group’s association of Thailand its core organiser.
Li also attended this year’s seventh Phouthai community festival in Loeng Nok Tha district of Yasothon earlier this month.
Some 2,000 Phouthai from various provinces of Thailand attended the event, which highlighted their distinctive style of dress, dancing, singing and lifestyle.
