CP Group taps AWS as strategic technology provider to support nationwide AI adoption, cloud deployment, and workforce enablement.
Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), alongside Arise Ventures Group and True Corporation, announced a strategic collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Wednesday at the "Thailand AI National Mission" event.
The announcement highlighted how Thailand's largest conglomerate intends to leverage AWS’s cloud and artificial intelligence capabilities to accelerate digital transformation across its retail, telecommunications, and financial services businesses, while supporting broader national digital enablement.
Speaking at the event, Suphachai Chearavanont, senior vice chairman of CP Group, chairman and CEO of Arise Ventures Group, and chairman of True Corporation, set out a broad strategic vision for Thailand’s digital economy. He argued that the country must rapidly build domestic AI capabilities to avoid becoming merely a consumer of foreign technology.
Citing global competitiveness rankings that place Thailand roughly 26th overall, Suphachai noted that the coming years will determine whether the country closes the gap with regional peers.
Pointing to World Bank projections of modest global growth over the coming decade, he emphasised that widespread AI adoption could significantly boost local productivity.
Suphachai outlined five broad priorities for Thailand's technological development:
Hyperscale Infrastructure: Expanding Thailand's domestic data centre capacity across multiple provinces to support advanced computing workloads and attract international technology investments.
Startup Ecosystem: Building an entrepreneurial pipeline by mobilising university students into simulated startup environments, drawing inspiration from regional venture-matching models.
Global Talent Destination: Positioning Thailand as an attractive hub for international AI researchers through competitive incentives and professional programmes.
Workforce Pipeline: Expanding direct university-industry partnerships to cultivate high-level local technical talent.
Ethics & Governance: Pairing technological expansion with robust frameworks for data security, AI ethics, and transparent digital governance.
"AI is the new infrastructure that will drive global transformation at a speed greater than the internet era," Suphachai said, noting that CP Group aims to play a key role in supporting national digital readiness.
Jaime Valles, vice president and managing director for Asia Pacific, Japan, and China at AWS, highlighted Amazon's ongoing infrastructure investments in the region.
AWS has previously committed more than $5 billion in Thailand over 15 years through its Bangkok cloud region to support enterprise cloud adoption.
Under the initiative, AWS will serve as the cloud enablement partner supporting CP Group’s ambitious target to upskill three million people in digital and AI skills.
This initiative builds on existing AWS training programs that have upskilled more than 120,000 Thais since 2017.
"We're bringing the full breadth of AWS's cloud and AI capabilities to help transform how Thailand builds, innovates, and prospers," Valles said.
The corporate entities detailed several operational initiatives that will utilise AWS technology:
Telecommunications & Satellites: True Corporation will leverage AWS cloud infrastructure to advance its digital operations and predictive network maintenance while exploring satellite broadband connectivity via Amazon Leo to improve access in underserved remote communities.
Fintech: Ascend Money will deploy AI-driven credit scoring tools on AWS to expand financial inclusion for underbanked populations.
Retail Operations: CP Group plans to scale its AI Center of Excellence across its retail network—including 7-Eleven, Lotus's, and Makro—using AWS tools such as Amazon Q for inventory forecasting and operational optimisation.
Open Innovation: CP Group announced the "AI FOR ALL" hackathon, inviting Thais aged 18 and older to prototype generative AI applications for healthcare, agriculture, and education.
Speakers at the event acknowledged significant operational headwinds facing the broader tech sector, including rising GPU hardware costs, semiconductor supply constraints, and the need for expanded clean energy infrastructure to power future computing facilities.
Closing the session, Sigve Brekke, Group CEO of True Corporation and Executive Chair of Tech, Telco, and Digital Business at Arise Ventures Group, underscored the role of international tech partnerships in achieving long-term digital goals.
"No single organisation can navigate these global technological shifts in isolation," Brekke said. "This collaboration brings together infrastructure, retail reach, and cloud capabilities to build a stronger digital foundation for Thailand."
Addressing whether the plan can realistically deliver results, Brekke noted that no single company can tackle global technological shifts alone: "This is what partnership is about—one plus one is more than two."
