“We found the selfie he posted on Facebook and have been monitoring his movements since,” Pol Major Thanaphrom Thana-arpakorn said in his capacity as inspector at the Metropolitan Police Division 8.
Thana Kanchanasak, 37, was wanted for fatally stabbing a man on November 25, 2002, after a quarrel at a fresh market in Bangkok’s Thon Buri district.
“I began working on fishing trawlers and rarely come to shore,” he told police.
Thana said late last year, he decided to purchase a smartphone and use Facebook to woo women to ease his loneliness. “I never thought that this would finally lead to my arrest,” he said.
Thanaphrom said initially the suspect had not posted his own photo on Facebook, but only decided to post his selfie after visiting his mother in Chaiyaphum province recently.
Police said the selfie gave them clues about Thana’s activities and made it possible for them to learn that he was planning to visit his mother again.
He was arrested on the bus in Nakhon Ratchasima province as he was heading back to work.
