THE Democrat Party has nominated former party-list MPs Kasit Piromya and Thawil Praison to become members of the National Reform Steering Committee, a party source said yesterday.
Meanwhile, Democrat leader Abhsit Vejjajiva yesterday voiced opposition to a proposal from Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam to have all political parties register as new parties.
Abhisit said this move was aimed at dissolving all parties in the Kingdom.
Instead, he said, the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) should reform the structure of political parties and boost their standards so they can become institutions that belong to the people.
However, he declined to say if there could be a hidden motive behind the proposal, such as removing party executives, or even removing him as party leader because he opposed the move to set up a national unity government.
Abhisit said he had heard that some people wanted small parties to be established so they can team up to create a national unity government.
“We should move away from this illusion. Every party should give the NCPO suggestions on how political parties can be reformed instead,” he said.
He also urged Wissanu to explain the purpose of his proposal, saying, “some people support the move, thinking it was just an administrative procedure, but if it means that their parties would be dissolved first, then they won’t agree with the proposal”.
