Law change may allow drug abusers to choose rehab

Justice Minister Paiboon Koomchaya said yesterday that Thailand was amending the law to allow drug abusers serving less than four years in prison for other crimes to volunteer for a rehabilitation programme.
He was presiding over the opening of an Asean seminar on rehabilitation for drug convicts at the Thailand Institute of Justice in Bangkok’s Pathumwan district ending tomorrow.
Paiboon said Thailand’s focus would be on community participation in convincing convicts to undergo rehab and using a multi-agency approach to provide them vocational training and follow-up counselling.
