Court accepts lese majeste charge against activist’s mother

The Bangkok Military Court on Monday accepted a lese majesty suit filed against a prominent political activist’s mother.

The National Council for Peace and Order in May accused Patnaree Chankij, 40, of lese majeste under Article 112 of the Penal Code and of committing a computer crime under the 2007 Act on Computer Crime.
The authorities alleged she failed to criticise or take other action against Burin Intin, a friend of her son, Sirawith Seritiwat, also known as Ja New, when he allegedly sent lese majeste messages to her online.
Sirawith is a prominent student activist with Resistant Citizen and the New Democracy Movement groups.
The court granted Patnaree a temporary release on Bt500,000 bail on the condition she does not leave the country without permission or be involved in a political movement or incite a political disturbance.
