Ailing Chavalit ‘has no plans to request

DESPITE his illness, former prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh plans to attend the reading of a verdict by the Supreme Court on Wednesday in a case against him and three others involving the fatal police crackdown on yellow-shirt protesters in 2008, his lawyer said .

Vipas Charupong, his lawyer in the case, said Chavalit maintained that he would be able to travel to court and would not seek a postponement of the verdict due to his illness.
The lawyer also said that he expected the three other defendants in the case, including former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, to attend court to hear the verdict.
“None of them have requested a postponement of the reading,” the lawyer said.
Chavalit served as deputy prime minister in Somchai’s short-lived government.
The two men are charged with malfeasance along with former national police chief Pol General Patcharawat Wongsuwan and former Metropolitan Police commander Pol Lt-General Suchart Muenkaew after being accused of being responsible for the deaths and injuries caused by the crackdown.
The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division on Political Office Holders is scheduled to read the verdict on Wednesday.
