Miyoshi, NEC pitch face-recognition surveillance system

Miyoshi Optoelectronics is a wholly owned subsidiary of SGX-listed company Miyoshi, a provider of integrated engineering services, which announced the partnership on Thursday.
The partners are introducing a system that integrates NEC’s NeoFace Watch, a real-time facial-recognition engine, into Miyoshi’s Digital SRS, a wireless audio-video wearable device.
Miyoshi describes the latter as “a highly reliable, low-latency, body-worn server/transmitter with COFDM streamer and COTS camera, personal ruggedised lithium battery on a Molle vest”.
“The integrated solution is referred to as ‘the Product’,” it said. 
Security officers using the gear will receive “instant analysis of what they see, enabling them to provide actionable intelligence to commanders”, Miyoshi said.
NeoFace, an artificial intelligence (AI) facial-recognition engine boasting the world’s highest authentication accuracy, generates real-time alerts when matching faces against a watchlist of individuals, thereby quickly finding a match for a person of interest, it added.
Miyoshi and NEC plan to jointly assess viable market segments, applications and potential customers, share the information, and collaborate in publicity efforts. 
A pilot contract has already been signed in one unnamed Southeast Asian country, where the system is being “used daily for border protection and search and rescue missions in the northern borders”, Miyoshi said.
“NEC has the world’s best facial-recognition software, being No 1 in both the accuracy and speed of recognition,” said Miyoshi chief executive Andrew Sin Kwong Wah. “Miyoshi has one of the most reliable body-worn systems with the ability to transmit digital HD video on high uptime proprietary wireless encrypted channel.”
NWC managing director Lim Kok Quee called the integration of the two firms’ equipment “one of the most powerful and competitive public safety surveillance solutions in the market today for law enforcement and border security”.
