More tax talks after high turnout: deputy minister

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is reviewing a draft bill on the long-awaited land and buildings tax, having formed a new sub-committee to study the burden posed by the proposed taxes.

Meanwhile, the Excise Department is planning to waive taxes on wine priced under Bt1,000 per bottle in order to protect local winemakers.

Wisudhi Srisuphan, deputy minister for finance, said that the sub-committee would assess targeted taxpayers’ burden from the land and buildings tax after the draft bill’s enforcement and their tax payment ability for the new effective rates.

“A sample of the targeted taxpayers will be gathered in Bangkok and its vicinities, and other provinces, and comparison will be made with taxes they have paid previously,” said Wisudhi, who chairs the committee to consider the draft bill.

Consultations about the draft bill were expected to be wrapped up in September. Given the number of people who want to comment, the deadline could be postponed, said Wisudhi.

The draft bill is set to come into force from January 1, 2019 onwards.
