Anti-rabies campaign sweeps Buri Ram after dog attack
Buri Ram livestock officials and municipality workers on Tuesday conducted an operation to capture stray dogs to sterilise and vaccinate them against rabies after a female dog bit seven people in a Muang Buri Ram market on Monday.
Veterinarian Suriya Kasongklang, a member of the Buri Ram Livestock Development Office, said the vaccinations and sterilisations were conducted in a five-kilometre radius of the market as a precaution against rabies.
The services were also available for pet dogs and cats.
The six-year-old female dog that attacked people at the market was captured and the seven bite victims were vaccinated as a precaution. Villagers told officials that the dog had recently given birth to a litter of puppies, which had gone missing.
The dog was supposed to be observed by a veterinarian to determine if it had rabies but it died from unknown causes on Monday. Its head was sent to the Lower Northeastern Veterinary Research and Development Centre in Surin to be tested for rabies, Suriya said.
