The Turkish president, a self-styled latter-day sultan and supporter of the Palestinian cause, has renewed a war against a stateless minority within its borders: the Kurds.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan lectures Israel day in and day out on Palestinian rights, but denies his own Kurds the very same rights. The bombing campaign against Kurdish positions, many of them civilian in nature, has no military or indeed ethical justification whatsoever.
The world loves “fight Islamic State” slogans, so Turkey is using them to justify attacks against the Kurds. The world is also very quick to publicise every single Palestinian victim of the conflict with Israel, but is eerily silent about the destruction of Kurdish villages at the hands of Erdogan’s army.
