Religions are a toolbox for tolerance

Re: "Religion is not the problem", Letters, September 16.

I share Alf Haupt’s opinion that people, not religions, are the main cause of conflict. The basic beliefs and teachings of most religions are essentially good, and not much different from each other in many respects.
In matters of faith, it is best to turn to a wise, tolerant and compassionate source for some guidance. King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn) promoted religious tolerance throughout his reign. He also advised those of his subjects who were confused as to their religious beliefs to carefully study each faith and choose the one they thought best suited them, and then to conscientiously follow its teachings.
This good and wise king’s enlightened attitude continues to be reflected in the religious tolerance so evident in Thailand today, with the tragic exception of the far South, where special circumstances apply. In any country, and especially in Thailand, attacks on religion strike a discordant note.
