The idea to expand the TPL from 18 to 20 teams next season was mooted at the previous board meeting, citing concerns about the legal threat after BEC Tero Sasana, one of three relegated clubs, went to court over the dispute over the TPL’s controversial decision to allow their 1-0 home loss to Bangkok United to stand despite the latter fielding an ineligible player.
The TPL’s proposal to expand the league, though, was met with fierce opposition from almost relevant parties, with many seeing the move as just an attempt to save certain club from being relegated.
Given such pressure, the TPL board decided to abandon the idea to expand the league, with BEC Tero, Port FC and TOT SC going down to the second-tier League One.
