Tales from the Punjab

India's classy Punjab Grill makes its Bangkok debut

FANS OF Indian food have plenty to cheer about with the arrival of Punjab Grill in Sukhumvit Soi 13.
Punjab Grill Bangkok is the third overseas branch of the brand, which is run by India-based Lite Bite Foods. Serving authentic Indian cuisine in eye-catching presentations and an upscale setting, Punjab Grill Bangkok is spread over 280 square metres – including the bar and lounge – and can comfortably seat 70 diners.
The menu has been created by chef Bharath Bhat, who brings with him a wealth of experience from such 5-star hotels and resorts as Grosvenor House Dubai, Armani hotels, St Regis, Le Meridien and Alila resorts. He ensures that not only high quality fresh ingredients and local produce are available, but also that the dishes reflect the discerning standards and authenticity of the Punjab Grill brand.
Some of his notable creations include the appetite-whetting amuse bouche (Bt180), a crunchy, sweet and savoury combination of potato, chutney and lentils, served in flour roll cones. Or start light with the crab-and-lentil shorba (Bt190), a French-style crab bisque with an Indian touch that sees the spiced crab claw meat, topped with a rich, mustard-infused lentil soup.
A more substantial starter is the platter of grilled chicken, tiger prawn and lamb (Bt1,200). The malai chicken is braised in bourbon, while the tiger prawn is scented with carom seed and char-grilled in a tandoori oven. The New Zealand rack of lamb is braised and char-grilled in a clay oven.
The extensive main course section has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. Recommended is the creamy and slightly sour butter chicken (Bt425) in which the boneless chicken is tenderised in cream and a buttery tomato curry. Equally delicious is the dal makhani (Bt320), where the black dal is slow-cooked overnight in tomato and cream.
The all-time classic chicken dum biryani (Bt475) comes in a generous portion and can easily be shared. Fragrant basmati rice and chicken are slow-cooked with fragrant green cardamom, mace, and rose water and served under a flaky pastry cover.
If you’re looking for an Instgram moment, don’t miss the raan sikandari (Bt1,500). The baby leg of lamb is braised and pot-roasted, scented with cinnamon and flavoured with cardamom and rum, which is set on fire when served.
Leave room for some decadent and addictive paneer jalebi (Bt275). The crispy, fried fresh cottage cheese strips are soaked in saffron and served with rabri or condensed milk sauce.
