Taking care of the elderly

With Thailand now fully embracing its ageing society, an increasing number of activities designed to raise consciousness about living healthily are being organised, The latest is Paradise Park Shopping Centre’s “Paradise Park for the Elderly Living Quality Life”, which kicks off on Wednesday (March 15) and runs through Sunday.

The event will feature a lecture titled “Troubling Signs of Dementia Syndrome” by Professor Solaphat Hemaranroj, assistant dean of the Innovation Education and Information Technology Faculty at Chulalongkorn University.
Aiming to provide medical recommendations on how to prevent and de-accelerate the occurrence of the dementia syndrome, other activities include a “Senior Fitness Test”, designed to help the elderly people make a self-evaluation of their future daily life undertakings, free health check-ups by the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Hospital and the Faculty of Chinese Medicine, Huachiew Chalermprakiet University, and an optical test by Banphaew Hospital. Other special activities include a discussion on activities conducive to brain development, exercise for elderly people, how to stay away from disease and laughter therapy.
“Dementia Syndrome does not only create complications for the patients but challenges for family members, loved ones, and society. Those who are caretakers are reminded to demonstrate understanding and acceptance of what it is as the patients suffer memory impairment, loss of articulation and even self-control making them incapable of looking after themselves in daily life. In addition, an expression of love on the part of the caretakers must be evident for when there is love they are likely to do their utmost for improved quality life for the patients. Caretakers must always keep awareness of their own limitations” in mind, says Dr Solaphat.
The event is at the Royal Park Plaza on the first floor. For more information, call (02) 787 1000 or visit www.ParadisePark.co.th.
