The sweet taste of summer

Up & Above restaurant at The Okura Prestige Bangkok welcomes the hot weather with Thai summer favourite khao chae.

 More than 200 years ago, long before fridges and freezers were invented, khao chae was the traditional summer meal served in the palace. A dish of jasmine rice was soaked in fragrant water and accompanied by several kinds of condiments using earthenware jar to keep it refreshing and cold.

Based on the royal recipe, this favourite summer platter of rice is now served in iced jasmine-infused water and paired with shredded sweet pork, shredded sweet beef, fried fish with shrimp paste balls and sweet peppers stuffed with pork and encased in an egg wrap that are steamed before being fried.

Other side dishes include fried shallots, fish balls and stir-fried sweet pickled Chinese turnips with egg. The khao chae menu is available from April 1 to 30 and priced at Bt525. Find out more at (02) 687 9000 or email [email protected].
