Family crises in focus for River City Film Club

The River City Film Club at River City Bangkok will screen a pair of intriguing family dramas free of charge on June 17 and 18.

Screenings will be at 4pm in Room 232 on the second floor. Free snacks and drinks will be served.
“Down the River”, directed by Asif Rustamov, will be shown on June 17. For his debut picture, the talented filmmaker from Azerbaijan spent more than four years writing the script and raising the money through crowd-funding.
The story is about Ali, the small-town coach of a young rowing team that includes his son Ruslan. The boy finds he can’t meet his father’s strict standards or even connect with him.
Ali is going through a mid-life crisis and wants to leave his wife Leyla and start a new life with his Polish girlfriend, Sasha. With an important race coming up, Ali swaps Ruslan on the team for another student, upsetting the boy badly. And a tragedy is waiting around the corner.

June 18 brings “When Love Comes”, directed by Taiwanese Tsochi Chang, a strong and moving story of a Chinese extended family living and running a restaurant in an old district of Taipei. The restaurant sees all sorts of comings and goings, from daily gambling to cops being bribed.
The family members span different generations. The father is always drunk, a brother is autistic, the first wife is infertile, the mistress accepted only because she can have children. The mistress has two grown kids, including a rebellious daughter, who is the film’s chief protagonist.
Amid multiple clashes and differences of opinion, diversity has its own merits as the family members go through a painful but enlightening process of change.
River City Bangkok is near the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel and has its own free shuttle boat from Saphan Thaksin Pier daily at 3.30pm.
