GULF Cultivates a Green Culture, Expanding “Turning Bottles into Purpose” Upcycling Project to Give Plastic Bottles a Second Life

What happens to a simple plastic water bottle once it is empty? At Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF), it marks the beginning of a transformative journey.

In its second year, GULF’s flagship green initiative, "Turning Bottles into Purpose" has expanded its horizon. Moving beyond its Bangkok headquarters, the project has successfully taken root across seven GULF offices in Thailand's Eastern region, engaging employees in a collective mission to sort and recycle right from the source. Between January and July 2026, GULF employees rallied together to rescue 1,183 kilograms of PET bottles from ending up in landfills. On August 7, 2026, Mr. Sitamon Ratanavadi, Vice President - Strategic Planning, officially handed over these bottles to Phra Maha Pranom Dhammalangkaro, the Abbot of Wat Chak Daeng in Samut Prakan province. At the temple, these bottles will be reborn through upcycling into saffron monk robes, warm blankets, clothing, and other daily necessities—a move that has successfully prevented 2.48 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) from entering the atmosphere.

Mr. Sitamon Ratanavadi, Vice President - Strategic Planning, Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF), shared, “Sustainability starts with simple, everyday habits. Through this project, we encourage GULF employees to make waste separation a second-nature practice. When we sort waste properly, what was once considered trash becomes a valuable resource, reducing environmental strain and maximizing resource efficiency. By scaling up this year, we have collected a cumulative 1,637 kg of PET bottles since the project's inception in 2025, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 3.42 tCO2e. It proves that when a green culture is nurtured consistently, it yields tangible, powerful results for our planet.”

Phra Maha Pranom Dhammalangkaro, Abbot of Wat Chak Daeng, stated, “If we view leftovers as trash, we look for a place to dump them, which incurs costs and harms the planet. But if we view them as raw materials, they serve a greater purpose—both worldly and spiritual. Wat Chak Daeng and GULF are showing that bottle caps can become souvenir keychains, and bottle bodies can become warm clothing and blankets. Beyond managing this 'external waste,' I encourage everyone to clear their 'internal waste'—be it anger, resentment, or attachment—through mindfulness, kindness, and perseverance to foster positive change within ourselves and society.”

One of GULF participating employees also shared, “I’m incredibly proud to play a part in this. Sorting waste might feel like a minor daily task, but knowing exactly where these bottles go and how they benefit others makes a world of difference. If we keep sharing this habit, it will spark a much larger movement for our environment.”

GULF launched the “Turning Bottles into Purpose” project in 2025 at its Bangkok headquarter, where the first batch of collected PET bottles was upcycled into 300 educational kits for children and woven into eco-friendly fabric bags. By extending the initiative to seven power plants in the Eastern region, GULF is amplifying its positive environmental footprint. Looking ahead, GULF aims to close the loop entirely by reintroducing these upcycled products back into its own corporate ecosystem and CSR activities, ensuring that materials are kept in use for as long as possible, fully embodying the spirit of the Circular Economy.
