Both before and during the World Heavyweight Championship bout between Ali (then age 32) and champion George Foreman (25) on October 30, 1974, many experts – including former champ Joe Frazier – predicted Ali would lose by a knockout in the early rounds. Foreman was younger, stronger and obviously determined to win.
However, when Ali sent Foreman to the canvas and won by a knockout in the eighth round, it was the supporters of “Ali the underdog” who were celebrating.
Of particular importance to me, the most celebrated boxing expert in our Bangkok neighbourhood became a completely humble person that day and remained so. Hence, Ali was one of the greatest sources of inspiration for underdogs all over the world.
