Nan airport remains open despite flood-hit road access

Nan Nakhon Airport remains open, but passengers should allow at least 3-4 hours for road travel and check flight status during heavy rain

  • Nan Nakhon Airport remains open and is operating flights on schedule despite heavy rain and flooding in the province.
  • Road access to the airport is restricted in some areas, and travelers are advised to allow at least 3-4 extra hours for their journey.
  • While the airport is operational, individual flights may still be delayed, diverted, or cancelled due to poor weather conditions like heavy rain and low visibility.
  • Authorities have placed the airport under 24-hour surveillance, monitoring water levels and preparing emergency measures to ensure passenger safety and continued operations.

Nan Nakhon Airport remains open and flights are operating according to schedule despite heavy rain and flooding across several parts of Nan province, aviation authorities confirmed on Wednesday (August 19, 2026).

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) advised passengers travelling to or from Nan to check road and traffic conditions before setting out because access to the airport is restricted in some areas.

Travellers should allow at least 3-4 hours for the journey to the airport and closely monitor flight information from their airlines, as the rain and flooding could affect both ground transport and subsequent flight operations.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds and poor visibility may cause flights to be delayed, diverted or cancelled.

CAAT and other agencies are continuing to monitor conditions, with passenger safety and safe flight operations taking priority.

Thai AirAsia flight FD3354 from Don Mueang was scheduled to arrive in Nan at 8.30am on Wednesday but was diverted to Chiang Mai Airport because heavy rain had reduced visibility at Nan Nakhon Airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DOA), confirmed that the aircraft later returned and landed safely at Nan Nakhon Airport at 11.15am.

Airports placed under 24-hour surveillance

Deputy Transport Minister Phattharaphong Phattharaprasit ordered the DOA to maintain round-the-clock surveillance after flash flooding in Pua district affected 12 subdistricts and 107 villages.

Nan Nakhon Airport and nearby airports have been instructed to prepare for emergencies and follow their disaster-response plans strictly.

Airport staff are monitoring water levels inside and outside the airport and checking drainage channels for blockages to ensure water can flow freely.

Surrounding areas are also being watched for any conditions that could affect aircraft take-offs and landings.

Backup generators have been prepared in case the Provincial Electricity Authority’s power-distribution system is disrupted.

Officials have also been told to coordinate with air traffic control, meteorological authorities, disaster prevention and mitigation offices and the Provincial Electricity Authority so they can respond promptly and assist passengers and aircraft during an emergency.

The DOA must also facilitate flights operated by government agencies and private organisations carrying assistance to flood-affected communities.

Phattharaphong instructed the department to prepare further support for residents after the floodwaters recede.

Passenger rights during flight disruptions

CAAT reminded passengers that they are entitled to assistance under Civil Aviation Board Regulation No. 101, which sets out measures protecting passengers on scheduled domestic and international flights.

The regulation specifies airlines’ responsibilities when flights are delayed or cancelled or when passengers are denied boarding, including requirements covering information and assistance.

Passengers’ rights and any compensation will depend on the cause of the disruption and the conditions set out in the regulation.

Travellers using Nan Nakhon Airport should continue checking ground routes and flight status with their airline before leaving, as conditions may change.
