The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) will apply revised progressive energy charges for residential customers from the September 2026 billing cycle, following a resolution by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on August 5.
The revision removes the cost of electricity used to provide public-lighting services from the tariffs charged to residential users, meaning customers will no longer bear the expense through their electricity bills.
The new energy charges under Residential Rate 1.1 are:
The charges under Residential Rate 1.2 are:
The rates apply from electricity bills issued for September 2026 onwards.
Electricity consumption is charged cumulatively across the applicable bands. Reaching a higher band does not mean that all electricity used during the billing period will be charged at the highest rate.
For example, units falling within the first band are charged at that band’s rate, while only the units exceeding its threshold are charged at the next rate.
The listed amounts cover only the energy charge. The final electricity bill will also include the monthly service charge, the energy adjustment charge known as the Ft charge, and value-added tax.
MEA has also revised the definition of residential electricity users.
The category now covers homes, temples, monastic establishments and religious premises of all faiths. It also includes premises used continuously for residential purposes that do not yet have permanent household registration, subject to the prescribed criteria and conditions.
