Senate reminded it represents the public

Former prime minister and leader of Democrat Party Abhisit Vejjajiva warned the future junta-appointed Senate to remember that they represent the public, not those who appointed them, and should always respect the people’s decision.

Abhisit said on Thursday that when he attended the reconciliation talks last month he said that if the reconciliation panel sought to have parties sign the socalled social contract, the junta-appointed Senate should also be included in the equation and promise that they would not violate the people’s intention.
If the Senate acted as a political party, conflicts would reemerge, Abhisit stressed.
“They should not forget that although they are authorised to vote for a prime minister, they will not have the ability to attend all Lower House’s meetings,” he said. “And even though they can vote for a prime minister, that prime minister cannot stay in power unless he or she is accepted also by the MPs or it will spark more conflicts.”
Abhisit also said that it was hard to foretell the situation. Time would reveal when the election will be held and the questions will be answered.
